Introspection
a Lenten special
In the West, Lent times with winter. In the old agricultural world, Lent then was a season of shortage, the point to scrimp and save, until renewal came in the form of spring. In tropical Philippines, Lent falls during summer, when land is parched and water runs dry. In whatever physical plane, Lent then calls for preparation.

The association of Lent with introspection is strong. The acts of giving up something – think of abstinence, fasting or even self-immolation – lend to a somber examination of self. More than an admittance of sorrow into our lives for the sins that we have commited, Lent is a time of purification and renewal.
